To ensure secure, compliant, and efficient adoption of artificial intelligence tools, Thompson Rivers University (TRU) follows a Copilot-First AI Usage Standard.
This approach prioritizes institutionally approved tools operating within secure enterprise environments before considering external AI platforms.
Institutional Position
Microsoft 365 Copilot is institutionally approved and operates within TRU’s secure Microsoft 365 environment under contractual and privacy safeguards.
Due to its enterprise integration and data protection controls, Copilot can address the majority of common academic and administrative AI use cases without introducing additional privacy, procurement, or compliance risk.
What is Copilot
Copilot is an AI-powered assistant that works alongside you.
Think of it as a smart helper that understands what you’re working on and provides suggestions, generates content, summarizes information, or helps complete tasks — so you can work more efficiently. It does not replace human judgment or expertise; instead, it supports decision-making and productivity, much like a co-pilot in an aircraft assists the main pilot.
From a technical perspective, Copilot is a conversational, generative AI assistant embedded within Microsoft 365 applications. It provides contextual assistance, automates routine tasks, and analyzes information securely within the enterprise environment.
What can a Copilot do?
Typical use cases appropriately supported within Copilot include:
- Drafting and revising documents
- Summarizing reports, policies, and readings
- Analyzing internal documents
- Creating presentations and instructional materials
- Supporting academic preparation
- Generating internal communications
- Enhancing day-to-day productivity
Default Usage Requirement
As a standard practice:
- Users must begin with Microsoft 365 Copilot for AI-assisted work involving Public or Internal data.
- Use of Confidential data is permitted only where explicitly authorized within the secure Microsoft 365 environment and in accordance with TRU data governance standards.
